Cyber Security Military Training for College Credit

College costs more money year after year. But military service college credit may save soldiers time and money for school. Schools may give transfer credit thanks to the ACE (American Council on Education). ACE helps with the proper transfer rate for military experience, which can allow you to use your cyber security military training for college credit

ACE Works For Soldiers and Schools

ACE does this with the Department of Defense (DoD). Together, they review your cyber security military training and experiences. The ACE data base then shares this info to help schools and soldiers. This data gives schools a guide for appropriate course credit. Soldiers use the data base for insight, and to set goals.

ACE works with schools and soldiers to help translate your cyber security military training and learning experience into credits.

How do I transfer cyber security military training for college credit?

First step – request your military transcript

Next, assess your status:
1) check your MOC – Military Occupation Code
2) review ACE recommendations for courses and occupations

Seek a degree to match your MOC. That means choose a program aligned to your military work experience, in this case your cyber security military training. A good place to start is our Online Degrees page.

Next step – find a military friendly school

Now look at military friendly schools with strong programs in your field of study that apply to your cyber security military training. Determine their military school credit policies to guide you. Admissions counselors and school websites share this info.

Speak to many schools. Schools interpret cyber security military training credits as they like. This can mean inconsistent policies for the same degree program and military experience. The decisions may vary case by case. Keep in mind that not all military experience is equal.

If you apply and get a disappointing result that did not accept your cyber security military training, appeal. Decisions on military transfer credits can change. Successful appeals occur. Don’t enroll before school notification of your final military transfer credits. You could luck out. Or you might want to try at a different college. Leave your options open until it’s clear.

How many college credits is basic training worth?

We used the ACE course search for Basic Training to get a specific example. In this case, the ACE search function result was Basic Officer Training in the Air Force. It took 12 weeks to complete training at Air University, Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama.

The ACE recommendation for transfer credits amounts to 9 total semester hours. That’s 3 hours PE, 3 in Military Science, and 3 in Personnel Supervision. This may translate in a variety of ways. The application of credits depends on the school and program.

College Registrars decide how to use the ACE credit recommendations at their own discretion. That means credits may not transfer exactly as a soldier expects. Credits can also apply in various ways. Examples of ways credits can apply includes:

  • to replace a required course
  • as an optional course within the major
  • as a general elective
  • to meet basic degree requirements
  • to waive a prerequisite

That means soldiers must check with schools to see how each handles transfers. Some colleges and even programs within schools are more military friendly than others. This means basic training could possibly be rolled in to your cyber security military training for credits. It helps to find an experienced advocate. Try to find an admissions advisor or fellow soldier/student to assist with the fine details.

In fact, find support from someone also in Cyber Sec. That way their experience with cyber security military training parallels your goals. This can make a big difference to help you choose the right school and program for you.

ACE credit Recommendations for Cyber Security MILITARY TRAINING AND THEIR RELATED JOBS

We constructed this table below to help clarify the Cyber Sec ACE credit recommendations based off of your cyber security military training. The MOS listed are specific to cyber security majors. Use the chart for your military branch to narrow your search.

Make note that lower division level courses are those for Associates degree. That means the first two years of college. These are often courses numbered 100 and 200. The higher division level courses are the latter years of school. These number 300 and 400. They’re more intensive and advanced.

ACE credit Recommendations for Technology related Army Jobs

Cyber and Information Security are subsets of Computer Science. So, students must study more general computer concepts first. They need the basics before specialized Security topics. This means students have to take more general classes. Luckily, many military positions may transfer for general technology college credits as well. After all, your cyber security military training and work are quite technical.

Other Options for Military Service Credit

The Military’s primary mission lies in protection. They fight for our rights. To do that, they educate soldiers. That training serves to create a mighty workforce. These lessons are about building relevant competence, i.e. your cyber security military training. There’s a job to do and the military centers all focus on achieving that goal. It’s not traditional classroom learning. But it sure does get the job done.

Does this kind of education have cognitive engagement equal to a college classroom? It’s debatable. Consider that the military prepares soldiers to solve complex challenges,in this case your cyber security military training. Often, they must do so while under tremendous pressure. They are out in life and death scenarios. Technical tasks, high stakes, and complicated situations engage our brains. That’s for certain.

What matters most in education isn’t how “deep” learning goes. It’s developing people who can apply what they’ve learned. A teacher wants to see their student achieve results with their lessons. Make it real in the world! Make things happen. That’s the point of education, after all – optimal results. Applying learning isn’t about credit hours. It’s about making a difference in the world, and that’s certainly what your cyber security military training can do!

When we measure learning this way, military experience carries more weight. Unfortunately, competency-based learning like this doesn’t always transfer into credit hours based off of your cyber security military training. But we can see how it should. Luckily, with the help of ACE, it’s gaining momentum and even some credit hours. As ACE expands their definitions and database, the value of military experience grows.
